It’s fair to say Danny Ings’ Aston Villa career has not gone to plan for the three-cap England man.

His summer arrival from Southampton for £30m was greeted with plenty of excitement by Aston Villa fans, but the former Liverpool forward has made just 19 Premier League starts and scored only five times.

Ings, 29, and fellow striker Ollie Watkins, another costly recruit at £28m possibly rising to £33m with add-ons, have struggled to play together as a front two and it does appear possible that, of the two, Villa boss Steven Gerrard is likely to seek to move on the older Ings as he bids to further stamp his authority on the squad in the summer.

Whilst Gerrard will clearly have his eye on young and pacy players with greater resale value, there is no doubt he is a keen admirer of his former Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez who is out of contract at Atletico Madrid in the summer.

If Gerrard is successful in bringing Suarez to Villa Park without paying a transfer fee, then Villa could well finance the deal by letting Ings go for around half the amount they paid for him.
