Arthur Labinjo Hughes: The heartfelt tributes from football players and fans

Football clubs, players and fans paid tribute to Arthur Labinjo-Hughes at the weekend.

The six-year-old football fan died at the hands of his cruel step-mother and father.

Arthur’s Stepmother Emma Tustin has been jailed for life - with a minimum of 29 years - after she was found guilty of murder.

His father, Thomas Hughes has been jailed for 21 years after being convicted of his son’s manslaughter.

After the couple were convicted on Friday, the nation united to grieve for Arthur.

Football clubs and supporters across the country also paid tribute to little Arthur at the weekend, when a minute’s applause was held inside stadiums across the country.

The applause took place in the sixth minute and a photo of Arthur wearing his beloved Birmingham City shirt was shown on some of the big screens.

Birmingham City’s players wore ‘Arthur We Love You’ t-shirts before their game against Millwall on Saturday (4 December) - and during the game play was stopped in the sixth minute so the players could join the fans and also take part in the minute’s applause while Arthur’s photo was shown on the big screen.

Footballers have also paid tribute to Arthur on social media.

After Aston Villa announced that the club would pay tribute to Arthur with a sixth-minute applause at Villa Park during their game against Leicester on Sunday 5 December, the club’s centre half Tyrone Mings, Tweeted: “I struggle to even read the details of this horrifying story but I’m so glad we are doing this.

After the game, he tweeted a photo of Arthur’s picture up on the big screen at Villa Park, with the caption: “For you, Arthur.”

England international and former Birmingham City midfielder Jude Bellingham also paid his respects.

He tweeted a picture of Arthur, with the caption: “Heartbreaking. Rest in peace Arthur.”

Blues’ striker Scott Hogan also paid tribute.

He tweeted: “May you finally find the peace and happiness you truly deserve . Sleep tight little man.”

West Brom and Wolves pay tribute

West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers also paid tribute to Arthur during their matches at the weekend, which you can see below.

How football fans reacted online

Hundreds of football fans also paid tribute to Arthur on social media.

Replying to the above tweet from Birmingham City, one fan suggested renaming one of the stands after Arthur.

He wrote: “Rename the Paddock after Arthur! Just ‘Arthur’s Stand’ Don’t associate the surname of parents. Just his name and his name alone.”

Another replied: “RIP little man from a Stoke City fan x football Unites.”

Another fan wrote:”R.I.P. Little man. If you’re up there looking down, know that you were loved.”
