The Yorkshireman has endured a long spell out injured, but marked his return to Ashes cricket with a memorable display. He will be behind the stumps as wicket keeper when play resumes tomorrow morning (June 17).

He said: "To be back out there on the big stage for the big dance, it's something you want to be part of. It didn't disappoint. The crowd were amazing. We know the Hollies and the crowd at Edgbaston always get behind us as a group. We know the group of players we have are backing each other and getting behind each other. The belief we have is great, when you go through the tricky times its your team mates you can call upon. With me being out for a while it was definitely something I could call upon when I was out in the middle."

Bairstow added that it took him a period to get his head back in the game following his long period of injury, but that he enjoyed his day with the bat.

He said: "It took me a bit of time to get going, there were a few nerves knocking about, but when I found my flow and got into the battle it was really enjoyable to be out there."
