A recent consultation by Birmingham City Council outlined their plans to turn Birmingham into a city of nature, the goal being to create more than 400 new green spaces across the city.

The plans come as the local authority also measured global warming rates across the city which showed that some city neighbourhoods are three-and-a-half times more at risk from factors including temperature rise, deprivation, access to green space and flooding.

With research highlighting the benefits of green and blue spaces are more important than ever we asked the people of Birmingham what their favourite parks and open spaces are in and around the city.

Naveed says: “My favourite Park is Aston Park, because I grew up in Aston and it was an area where I’d go to the park and go and visit Aston Hall etc. And I have so many fond memories in that area that even though there are many other park out there which are bigger and stuff like that, this park relates to me because I have so many fond memories.”

Richard says:

“Well, the parks that I’ve grown up with is like Cannon Hill. I’ve grown up around Cannon Hill. There’s not much parks now. Well if there are, they’re not they’re not fit for purpose. You know, you can’t really have a nice Sunday picnic out there because it’s all destroyed. No one don’t really want to venture too far, just to goto sit in the park.”

Dougy says:

“For me, I’m a Cannock Chase kinda guy. So I just love - I used to cycle a fair bit now - but I love to run, love to stay fit. In fact I’ve done my steps and I’m already on 20,000 steps today and I’ve only been here since eight o’clock! So I think green space is - especially in Birmingham - we need so much more.

“It’s quite a beautiful city in Castle Bromwich and those areas - Solihull - whereas the area is very grey, very bleak, like you walk up New street - it’s so grey isn’t it?

“Very daunting because of how tall the buildings are - so I think if you had a few more green spaces, even around here, somewhere you can go on your lunch and just sit down - it does you the world of good.”
