Earth Day 2022 is almost upon us, a day which calls on us all to unite and work to protect our planet.

Events are due to take place around the world to mark the special day, which was first held in 1970.

Here’s all you need to know ahead of the day, what it’s all about, and which events are taking place in Birmingham this year.

What is Earth Day?

Marking its 52nd anniversary this year, Earth Day’s mission is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide.

According to the official website of the day, Earth Day is “the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement, working with more than 150,000 partners in over 192 countries to drive positive action for our planet.”

The day is to raise awareness of what needs to be done to protect the planet for wildlife and future generations.

What are the origins of Earth Day?

Since its creation in 1970, Earth Day has grown to a point where approximately 1 billion people worldwide take part.

The day was devised by US senator Senator Gaylord Nelson, the junior senator from Wisconsin, who had long been concerned about the deteriorating environment in the United States.

Inspired by the student anti-war movement, Senator Nelson wanted to infuse the energy of student anti-war protests with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution.

A young activist called Denis Hayes was recruited to organise the campus teach-ins and they choose April 22, a weekday falling between Spring Break and Final Exams, to maximise the greatest student participation.

Since this first day, Earth Day has grown to a truly global event.

When is Earth Day 2022?

Earth Day this year is set to take place on Friday, 22 April. Events will take place on this day and across the weekend.
