We’re all becoming more aware of how important it is to do our bit to help combat climate change. And reducing meat in our diet is a key way many of us can help to cut those carbon emissions as plant-based food produces less greenhouse emissions.

So, on World Vegan Day on November 1, we take a look at Birmingham’s contribution to the movement that began in 1944 in England and has now become a global one. The Vegan Society, located in Birmingham, was started by Donald Watson, Elsie Shrigley, George Henderson and his wife Fay Henderson and others.

Vegan was a term used for non-dairy eating vegetarians, and the movement has picked up globally. As well as being beneficial for your health and the environment, vegan food has come a long way, with many restaurants and cafes adapting popular meat and dairy dishes, transforming them into a meal made from plants.

Whether you’re swapping to a plant-based diet for one day only, a few days a week, or a permanent lifestyle choice, there are plenty of fantastic restaurants across Birmingham, from fine dining spots to cosy cafes.

Here are a few of our favourite spots in Birmingham:
