We visit the Alchemist in Birmingham for its 'out of this world' cocktail - here's our verdict

BirminghamWorld visits the Alchemist Brindleyplace, to experience the ‘out of this world’ sensation of the Cosmic Oyster Cocktail - but does it really lives up to it’s name?

The Alchemist, known for its creative cocktails and innovative dishes is a restaurant that known for its otherworldly experiences. As this is my first time visiting the venue, I of course, had to see if the hype was true.

Little did I know what to expect as the Cosmic Supper Club awaited me - the Alchemist’s latest special menu offering, which is compelling diners with its promisess of an interstellar dining experience at Brindleyplace, Birmingham city centre’s popular canalside destination.

Upon entering the bar and restaurant, I was greeted by the décor of modern aesthetics and alchemical flair. The dimly lit space exuded an air of sophistication, with plush velvet seating and metallic accents. The first dish served was the Chorizo and Cheddar Dough Balls. These doughballs were a delightful surprise.

The dough balls were paired a syringe filled with rich, melted cheddar to inject into the meat, perfectly complementing the spicy chorizo. The accompanying sauce offered a subtle hint of garlic that gradually faded. Each bite was a flavourful explosion, setting the tone for the rest of the evening.

Next came the Chicken Pan-Fried Gyozas, a dish that truly showcased the Alchemist’s culinary wizardry. It was also my first time trying the chicken gyozas. The gyozas were delicately crispy on the outside, while the chicken filling was juicy and flavourful. The accompanying dipping sauce added a tangy kick.

Paired with the Salt and Pepper Fries, it was a combination that satisfied the palate.

Originally we thought that the fries would be sprinkled with pepper similar to Nando’s spicy fries, but were instead served with a colourful mix of green and red peppers, topped with a special touch of onion - an adventurous twist on a classic.

I also indulged in the Tempura Prawn lollipops. The prawns were cooked to perfection, their light tempura batter providing a satisfying crunch with each bite, not spicy but mild.

Now, the star of the show – the Cosmic Oyster Cocktail. This special disco blue mixture was a sensory delight, with fresh passion fruit pearls mingling with the cocktail’s Bombay Presse Gin to create a unique blend of flavours - the gin really pushed through the other flavours. Served in a shimmering glass, it was as if the cocktail was bathed in a celestial potion.

The grand finale of our cosmic supper was the Next Level Chocolate Brownie. This was no ordinary brownie - it was a decadent, chocolatey delight that melted in the mouth, its rich flavour lingering long after the last bite.

To wash it all down, I opted for the Aperitivo Cosmic Oyster Cocktail, a special red variant of the oyster cocktail that added a refreshing twist to the end of the meal. I actually found this variant more appealing than the original oyster cocktail, due to its slightly sweet taste, with a soft balance of gin, elderflower, and citrus.

Our visit to The Alchemist was a journey through a galaxy of flavours, each dish a star shining with its own unique taste - we were so pleased to have accepted our invitation to try out the new menu.

The Cosmic Supper Club was really a cosmic experience that leaves you starry-eyed, craving for more, especially the Chorizo and Cheddar Dough Balls, as it was favourite out of the brunch. I would definitely be heading back to The Alchemist, for more of its inventive dishes and spellbinding drinks!
