I asked Brummies which high street store they miss the most & their what their first ever purchase was

Over the years we’ve lost so many stores that are part of the tapestry of our culture. Memories of the Woolworths Pick and Mix shine brightly for us.

Buying our first album from HMV - which has fortunately reappeared. New Look is the latest closure. I’m here to ask Brummies which store they miss the most.

We might try to deny being materialistic but it’s undeniable that these brands play and we all have fond memories of our high street escapades growing up, and one which stands out for so many of us is our first solo purchase. So I also asked Brummies about their first major purchase.

Paul says: “​​Yeah I suppose Woolies’s - I miss Woolworths, you know at the top of the ramp of the old Pallasades - or New Street Station - as local’s still remember it is as. Yeah, I kind of miss that - a lot of record shops, a lot of venues. Reddington’s Rare Records - you know, probably a lot of things that you remember from the past.”

Farron says: “I think it would be borders, the bookshop. I used to go there as a kid, especially as a teenager, go and hang out with my best friend and just peruse the aisle and the knowledge that the people had there of the different books, the recommendations, was just lovely.

“And they were completely fine with just teenagers sitting there and flicking through what was there for the whole day. Yeah, that was pretty much - it’s very much linked to my personal experience.”

Regarding his first ever purchase Farron says: “So that would definitely be Pokemon Blue and a Gameboy Colour. I remember hugely saving up for that, getting enough money to buy both of those things.

“And it really sticks with me because of how proud my parents were that I’d managed to get all this money together, you know, a couple of pounds at a time to be able to buy something that big.”

Harmony says: “Yeah. My first purchase then would be the iPhone 7 Plus when I was about 18/19 and I bought it because of the fact that I was so excited that I could finally get something that’s under my name. And I was an adult so I kind of wanted to explore that luxury of being an adult.”
