A man has been jailed for nine years after pleading guilty to killing a teenager who was ‘aspiring doctor’ in Birmingham.

Yahya Adan was only 18 years old on 22 October 2019, when he was struck by a moving car. Adan had gotten off a bus and was crossing Alum Rock Road when Raja Khan, who was driving a VW Bora, overtook the bus travelling at nearly 50mph. His car hit the 18-year-old and then he sped away from the scene.

Adan was left with catastrophic injuries and passed away in hospital a day later. Khan, 32, was arrested on 30 October 2019 after a complex police investigation.

Khan, of Jersey Road, Alum Rock, pleaded guilty to death by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and committing acts with intent to pervert the course of justice at Birmingham Crown Court on 25 March 2021.

He was sentenced to nine years in prison on Friday 26 August 2022 and will be disqualified from driving for five years on release.

What have detectives said about the case?

Detective Constable Jamie Simon who investigated the case, said: “This was a complex investigation and the family have been waiting for nearly three years for justice, so I am really pleased to see Khan is now in prison for his actions. I know this result will never bring Yahya back, but I hope it provides some comfort to his family.”

The victim’s family paid tribute to Adan at the time of the collision, saying: “Yahya was a beautiful, calm soul. He brought nothing but joy and happiness everywhere he went. Unfortunately, he passed away but his memory will always be with us.

“He was a beloved son, brother, an aspiring doctor and a precious member of various communities. His generosity, compassion and infectious smile will always be remembered. There is a gaping hole in many lives and he is dearly missed by everyone.”
