A man has been charged with attempted murder and sexual assault after a pensioner was stabbed in a Worcester attack.

Anthony Roberts, 56, of Amber Heights, Green Hill, Worcester, has been charged with attempted murder, sexual assault and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

A 71-year-old pensioner was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham in a critical condition on Sunday morning after reports of a stabbing. Police say the elderly woman suffered multiple stab wounds before police were called on Sunday shortly after 2am on Kleve Walk in Worcester.

Police say the pensioner suffered multiple stab wounds shortly after 2am on Quay Street in Worcester. West Mercia have sealed of Quay Street and opened a crime scene while they investigate the attack.

In a statement, a spokesman said: “West Mercia Police is investigating the attempted murder of a 72 year old woman in Quay Street, Worcester, in the early hours of this morning.

“The victim suffered multiple stab wounds shortly after 2am and has been taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. She is in a critical condition.

“A 56 year old male is in custody on suspicion of attempted murder.”
