Here’s what you need to know

While it’s famously difficult to predict, all signs point towards snowfall in Birmingham tomorrow (Saturday, January 4th.)

The Met Office has issued an amber snow and ice warning for much of the Midlands, which comes into force at midday on Saturday and ends at 11:59pm on Sunday (January 5th.)

The warning also now covers ice, as well as snow to cater for freezing rain. This means there is a risk of injuries caused by slips and falls on icy surfaces.

When will snow hit Birmingham?

According to both the Met Office, light snow is expected to start falling at 7pm on Saturday evening, with heavy snowfall then expected between 8pm and 12am during the following hours. The BBC predicts sleet at 7pm on Saturday.

West Midlands forecast

An amber weather warning for snow and ice covering the West Midlands is in place from 6pm on Saturday to Sunday night, the Met Office has said.

Temperatures are expected to drop between 0 degrees and -1 degrees at the weekend. In Birmingham, temperatures are also expected to range between 0 degrees and 5 degrees on Sunday (January 5). Forecasters believe the region could see 5cm of snow this weekend across the region.

  • Some rural communities cut off
  • Power cuts and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, affected
  • Delays and cancellations to rail and air travel is expected
  • Travel delays on roads, stranding some vehicles and passengers
