Road closures in Aston, Birmingham, as water pipe bursts & taps run dry in homes

A burst water main on Aston Hall Road caused major flood water in Aston, Birmingham, yesterday morning (Wednesday, June 14) - with Severn Trent advising that repair work was completed by noon.
Taps ran dry in thousands of homes and drivers and bus passengers were asked to avoid Lichfield Road in Aston, near to Cuckoo Road. West Midlands Fire Service issued an alert around 7am.

Hide AdThis morning (Thursday, June 15) West Midlands Roads has advised that Lichfield Road at the junction of Aston Hall Road remains closed. They have advised commuters to expect delays and congestion in the area. There has been no update from National Express West Midlands about bus services being diverted today - the number 67 was diverted yesterday.
During the incident on Wednesday three people were rescued from stranded vehicles and several businesses became inaccessible, firefighters said. Three schools were also shut.
Severn Trent issued advice to locals - apologising for ‘supply interruptions’ and announcing that everyone’s water was back on by 11.21am.
On Wednesday evening West Midlands Roads advised that Lichfield Road remained closed and that the A38M was expected to be extra busy due to the traffic disruption.

Hide AdNational Express West Midlands said yesterday that bus service number 67 is diverting in both directions. 67 Service Towards City: Tyburn Road, Aston Expressway, Park Circus , Waterlinks Blvd, Lichfield Road.
Severn Trent said: “We’re pleased to share that customers in the affected area should now have their water back on, and our teams will now be focusing on repairing the burst pipe. As we’ve moved water around the network to get everyone’s water back on, this may cause some slight discolouration, we’d like to reassure people this is nothing to worry about and it will clear.
“We know the burst has caused traffic issues in the area, and we’re sorry about this and we’re working closely with the council and emergency services to keep everyone safe but look to ease the congestion in the area also.
“We want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we worked to get the supply back on, and we’ll be doing everything to get the pipe fixed, and area back to normal as soon as we can.”

Hide AdWest Midlands Fire Service said they had left the incident before 3pm. A WMFS spokesperson said earlier: “Extensive flooding is this morning (Wednesday 14 June) affecting the Lichfield Road area of Aston in Birmingham, following the burst of a water main.
“Three fire crews and police are managing the scene, while engineers from Severn Trent work to repair the burst. We have rescued three people from stranded vehicles. Please do not enter flood water. Several businesses in the area are currently inaccessible.”
