Cllr Mohammed Azim who represented Sparkbrook & Balsall Heath died yesterday (Sunday, August 14)

Local councillors, MPs and residents have paid tribute to former Lord Mayor and Labour councillor Mohammed Azim who died yesterday (Sunday, August 14).

Cllr Azim represented Sparkbrook & Balsall Heath. He served as Lord Mayor during the pandemic.

His daughter, Cllr Bushra Bi, serves as a Labour councillor for Ward End.

Leader of Birmingham City Council Cllr Ian Ward said: “Heartbroken to hear that my good friend Cllr Mohammed Azim passed away today. He was a good man who served Birmingham and his community with pride - particularly in his time as Lord Mayor.. Thinking of his family at this very sad time.”

The current Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Maureen Cornish, said: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Lord Mayor Cllr Mohammed Azim.

“Mohammed was a magnificent First Citizen of Birmingham and served his city with honour, dignity and pride over a unique two-year term (2019 – 2021). My sincere condolences go to Mohammed’s wife, daughter Cllr Bushra Bi and all the family at this extremely sad time.”

The team at Central BID Birmingham,  which supports retail, leisure and hospitality businesses in Birmingham city, said: “Very sad to hear former Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Mohammed Azim passed away at the weekend, he was a great servant to the city.

“In 2020, whilst in office, Cllr Azim offered a special invite to the BID team to thank them for their services. Our thoughts are with his family.

Hall Green Labour MP Tahir Ali said: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Councillor Mohammed Azim. He was a man of great dignity and commitment who was deeply respected and loved by all those who knew him.”

Yardley Labour MP Jess Phillips said: “So very sad to hear this. Few people pounded the pavement more. He was lovely and kind. All love to his family.”
