M42 closure near Birmingham Airport: drivers urged to use new route

Motorists in the Midlands are being warned of overnight slip road closures on the M42 near Birmingham Airport as part of ongoing safety and capacity upgrades.
As part of the slip road closures, motorists have been advised to use the new A4545 to access the A45 westbound and Birmingham Airport.

Hide AdNational Highways has announced the following northbound closures at M42 junction 6:
- Monday 28 & Tuesday 29 April (9pm–5am)
Entry slip road closed Lane 1 and Lane 2 closures on the M42 just before and after junction 6.
- Wednesday 30 April, Thursday 1 & Friday 2 May (9pm–5am)
Exit slip road closed Removal of the free-flow link from M42 northbound junction 6 to A45 westbound, plus lane closures on the roundabout.
- Drivers needing to access the A45 westbound or Birmingham Airport are advised to use the new A4545 link road, which opened in December 2024.
- Alternative route: Continue northbound on the M42 Exit at junction 9 Return southbound to junction 6 Join the A45 eastbound, loop through Stonebridge Island, and return westbound on the A45
National Highways assures that the M42 will remain open throughout as a diversion route, including for drivers affected by the HS2-related closure of the A46 near Coventry.
Motorists from Solihull, Birmingham, Coventry, and surrounding areas should plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
