Police were called after three people burst into a property on Gypsy Lane, Erdington, in the early hours of Tuesday morning (21 Dec).

The occupant was confronted by the men armed with knives, but as she started to scream, they backed away to the door and made off in a white van.

A van, on false plates, was spotted by police traffic officers around 30 minutes later on Tyburn Road, but it sped off and crashed a short distance away, where the occupants ran off.

With the help of their dog unit and drones team, two teenagers, aged 18 and 17, were tracked down nearby and arrested.

In the van officers found an arsenal of weapons including a sword, a hockey stick, a hammer and a homemade stun gun.

Within minutes a car pulled up but made off immediately, only to crash within minutes on Blossom Grove. The driver made a getaway, but an 18-year-old passenger was detained when further weapons and drugs were found in that vehicle.

What did police say about the arrests in their own words?

Detective Sergeant Curt Wilkins, from force CID, said: “All three were arrested for varying offences of aggravated burglary, possession of a firearm and an offensive weapon, and failing to stop for police.

“We believe the offenders could have broken into the wrong house on Gypsy Lane and fled on realising their mistake, but they gave the occupants a nasty shock.

“We’re now working through CCTV and forensic lines of enquiry to get to the bottom of the parts played by those arrested and identify anyone else involved.”

The three teens have been released on conditional bail while our enquiries continue.
