The most trustworthy neighbourhoods in Birmingham have been revealed.

New research, conducted by think tank Onward, has looked into the most trusting and careful neighbourhoods in each city.

Onward has used the research to develop a ‘trust map’ of England, revealing where trust levels are at their highest and lowest in neighbourhoods across the country.

The research has also been presented to the levelling-up secretary Michael Gove and will help policymakers identify the causes of trust in communities. Higher levels of trust within neighbourhoods is associated with higher economic growth, better mental health and better public services.

Using the Office of National Statistics’ standardised question on trust, surveyors asked people on a scale of one to five whether ‘generally speaking, people can be trusted or that you can’t be too careful in dealing with people?’

The results of the research uncovered a link between levels of trust and low levels of antisocial behaviour across England, as well as showing that rural areas are more trusting than other parts of England.

The Times reports that the findings are likely to form part of Rishi Sunak’s new goverment strategy to deal with such crime.

According survey of more than 42,000 people, Bents Green in Sheffield is the most trustworthy neighbourhood in the UK where 62.1% of the community are trusting.

What’s been said about the research?

Adam Hawksbee, deputy director at Onward, told The Times: “The prime minister has said that he wants to build the strength and resilience of our communities. Our new research helps to understand the scale of the challenge and begin tackling it. Social trust underpins a healthy democracy, strong economy, and vibrant communities.

“Our data shows that in too many places this vital trust is lacking. That’s why boosting it should be a guiding mission for the government.”

We’ve taken a look into the research to see which are the 10 most trust worthy neighboourhoods in Birmingham.

The research has been calculated by subtracting the proportion of people who are always or usually careful from the proportion that always or usually trust.
