Adults across the UK are being urged to get their Covid-19 booster vaccination to help protect against the Omicron variant with cases continuing to rise rapidly across the country.

The UK reported its highest number of daily Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, with more than 189,000 reported yesterday (30 December), breaking the previous high set the day before.

Despite the record high figures, the UK government has confirmed that no new Covid-19 restrictions will be put in place in England before the new year.

In England, the rate of Covid-19 cases rose from 808.7 per 100,000 people in the week to 16 December, to 1,207.4 per 100,000 in the week to 23 December. That is an increase of 49.3%.

At neighbourhood level, coronavirus case rates have been published for the week to 23 December.

Here are the Sandwell neighbourhoods which have seen the biggest rise in that time.

1. Langley Green

Langley Green has seen case rates of positive Covid cases rise by 151.9% from 310.2 cases per 100,000 people to 781.3.

2. Hamstead West

Hamstead West has seen case rates of positive Covid cases rise by 139.1%, from 408.6 cases per 100,000 people to 977.1.

3. West Bromwich North

West Bromwich North has seen case rates of positive Covid cases rise by 139.0%, from 364.2 cases per 100,000 people to 870.4.

4. North Tividale

North Tividale has seen case rates of positive Covid cases rise by 129.4%, from 332.9 cases per 100,000 people to 763.7.

5. Charlemont

Charlemont has seen case rates of positive Covid cases rise by 120.6%, from 329.9 cases per 100,000 people to 727.7.
