A man was attacked with a machete and received serious injuries to his body during the incident

A 17-year-old boy who carried out a vicious attack on a man while armed with a machete in Birmingham has been convicted.

The defendant, who can’t be named as he under 18, has been sentenced to 30 months at a Young Offender Institution for the sustained attack which left the victim with nasty injuries.

He had pleaded not guilty to a charge of wounding with intent but was found guilty following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

The incident took place on the evening of 19 October 2021 where a man was attacked outside his home in Woodgate Valley by a group of youths. He was attacked with a machete and received serious injuries to his body.

Despite his injuries, the victim managed to restrain his attacker until officers arrived. During the attack his son was also stabbed in the stomach as he rushed to help his dad. Both were taken to hospital. The defendant was also injured and taken to hospital. While he was there police seized a knife sheath from him.

Officers carried out an investigation including securing CCTV and doorbell footage of the attack which helped build a case which was presented in court and resulted in a successful conviction.

A statement from the force, read: “Knife crime has a huge impact on communities. We want to educate and inform the public about the dangers of carrying a knife, and dispel misconceptions about knife crime, for example, ‘everyone is carrying a knife’ or that ‘carrying a knife is good for protection.”
