Birmingham has got an exciting street art scene, particularly in the city centre and in Digbeth. Street art murals capture Digbeth’s modernistic and youthful spirit and are widely admired with some well know artists contributing to the murals on the post industrial buildings.

But you don’t always have to head down to Digbeth to find fabulous street art. BirminghamWorld met up with artist Malutama outside the New Street Odeon in Birmingham city centre.

Malutama is an artist that is newer to the street art scene in Birmingham, who for the past few months has been taking his Space Art canvases to the streets. He produces them in less than five minutes. “I’ve been painting since I was ten. I have always been astronomical. I wanted to be an astronaut, so I combined my passions,” said Malutama.

Malutama said: “It depends but it can take me less than 60 seconds to about two minutes. Look up planet space art on Youtube.” He tries to paint every day and gets his inspiration by watching space content and follows other space loving artists.

Malutama: “It’s not just me there are loads of guys doing this, they have youtube channels and they’ve inspired me to do what I’m doing now. Business focused, Malutama does not use social media to promote his art but instead finds it more important to sell his art directly.

Malutama shared: “I look at the world differently. This is not normal. You don’t see this everyday. They think Black men especially are rappers, basketball players but when they see a black man doing that… They don’t expect to see that.”

The artist does not follow what is popular like football but he said that he still knows what’s going on in the world. He wants people to understand his work and to think about space and what it means to them.
