Shop worker attacked with a hammer in Birmingham

Officers responding to reports of disorder in which a shop worker was attacked with a hammer have arrested a man.

The suspect attempted to run away from officers who received a 999 call just after 8.30am yesterday (Saturday, April 22). The attack happened on Villa Road, Handsworth. A man in his 40s was taken to hospital with a stab wound and other injuries, which are not life-threatening.

A 35 year-old suspect was caught less than 100 metres down the road after he attempted to run from the scene. He was arrested on suspicion of assault and robbery. He remains in custody for questioning.

There were additional patrols along the Soho Road and Villa Road by the local Lozells and Handsworth neighbourhood police team, working with partner including the Soho Road BID and local businesses, following the attack.
