West Midlands Fire Service asked people to avoid the area around Sandwell Valley as they deal with a serious fuel spillage

Fire crews are attending to an incident in Sandwell Valley, West Bromwich. A cordon has been established to allow fire crews and partners to carry out their work safely.

West Midlands Fire Service have asked people to avoid the area as crews and partners are carrying out their work there today (April 4). Currently, Forge Lane is closed to the public and people have been urged in the Sandwell Valley area to refrain from barbecues, bonfires and all use of naked flames.

The fire crews were called at 9.08am today about a fuel spillage off Forge Lane, West Bromwich, close to the Hilltop Golf Course.

Around 30 firefighters and four fire engines from West Bromwich, Perry Barr, Hay Mills and Smethwick fire stations initially responded, alongside specialist vehicles and equipment to deal with an incident of this type.

West Midlands Fire Service said: “We are working closely with a number of partner agencies to bring the incident to a safe conclusion and expect to be in attendance into the afternoon and early evening.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called just after 10am to an incident on Park Lane in Handsworth Wood, Birmingham. A paramedic officer was sent to the scene but there were no patients requiring treatment and so we were stood down.”
