The dog appeared to be on its side in the canal next to a wooded area. A concerned resident shared the images of the canine to seek help from residents of the area as she was unable to reach the body from land.

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: “We are concerned to hear reports of this poor dog found in the canal. We would welcome any information which could help us to establish how this dog came to be found in these suspicious circumstances. Anyone with information should contact our emergency line on 0300 1234 999.”

The Canal and River Trust has also been notified of the tragic discovery. The charity said its teams will retrieve the dog. A spokesperson told BirminghamWorld: "Oh no – that’s really sad. I’ve let the team know so they will pop out to retrieve the dog from the canal.

“If members of the public let us know if they see any dead animals on the canal, we will get them removed. They can either report it by calling is on 03030 404040 or send us at tweet at @CRTWestMidlands."
