Royal Mail workers in Birmingham have joined thousands of colleagues up and down the country in 19 days of strike action throughout October, November and December.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) who represent workers across the communication sector estimate that there has so far been over 700,000 days lost to strike action.

Across the country, roughly 115,000 workers will take part in the strike action.

This is a number which will grow rapidly towards the back end of a year which has been one of the biggest for strike action in over a decade.

Why is the CWU in dispute with Royal Mail over pay?

The union’s members are out on strike in an effort to improve on the pay deal given to them, and that the response to a ballot for national strike action was met with an overwhelming yes vote.

A spokesperson for the CWU said: “Our Royal Mail members have had an unagreed 2 per cent pay deal imposed on them.

“This is at a time when RPI inflation is currently running at 11.8 per cent and when Royal Mail has announced Group profits of £758 million and when the company is paying out many millions to private shareholders.

“In a national strike ballot over pay, our Royal Mail members voted by a 97.6 per cent majority to take action.”
