Officer accused of forcibly removing man’s turban

West Midlands Police has responded after an officer was accused of 'forcibly removing a man's turban and stamping it on the floor".

The alleged incident was said to have taken place at Perry Barr Custody Suite following the arrest of a member of the Sikh community for "minor traffic offences" on October 25. Some in that community have posted their fury on social media.

The force have said: "It is sometimes necessary to search anyone who is uncooperative for weapons or anything which could cause harm." A complaint over the alleged incident is being investigated by the force's Professional Standards Department.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police has confirmed that a man has been charged with obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty together with two other counts.

Busiest night ever for police 999 calls

West Midlands Police have seen a record number of calls in one day. Students enjoying their first night out after Covid restriction helped push the number of calls. The force say that 2,900 were received in 24 hours on 25 September.
