Birmingham: 14 photos from the Jewellery Quarter counter-protest following UK riots

West Midlands Police said there were no reported disorder or any arrests made at the protest in Birmingham last night

Hundreds of counter-protesters gathered in the Jewellery Quarter on Wednesday evening (August 7) following rumours a far-right rally was due to take place in the area.

A number of businesses in the Jewellery Quarter closed early and boarded up their windows this afternoon (August 7) after being advised by police following rumours an anti-immigration protest was going to take place.

A potential anti-immigration protest was reportedly due to begin at around 8pm in the Birmingham neighbourhood but has not taken place.

Instead, hundreds of counter-protesters gathered in the Jewellery Quarter and West Midlands Police haven’t reported any clashes with opposition groups.

During the counter protest, people held Stand up to Racism flags and banners.

A statement from the force, read: “We understand that people across the area are feeling worried and concerned and we want to reassure you that we will not tolerate violence or disorder.

“Over the last few days we have seen a lot of rumour, speculation and misinformation online; this can be extremely harmful to our communities.

“Please challenge what you see online, report where appropriate and consider the source of the posts. Always go to trusted sources for your information which includes news outlets and through our social media channels.”
