More than 100,000 people have signed up to use bikes available through the West Midlands Cycle Hire - with almost half a million rides undertaken.

The bike share scheme launched in spring 2021 and now it has arrived in Moseley - with six new docking locations added to the network, Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) has announced.

The new additions mean there are now 195 physical and ten virtual docking stations across the West Midlands – the majority located in town and city centres.

The total fleet of bikes is 1,500 with a split of 1,350 green and grey branded pedal bikes and 150 green and purple electric bikes.

You will find the physical Mosley docking stations at: the junction of Alcester Road and Salisbury Road. There are five virtual docking stations at the following junctions:

  • Alcester Road/Chantry Road,
  • Moor Green Lane/Russel Road,
  • Edgbaston Road/Oakfield Road,
  • Oxford Road/Wake Green Road and
  • Yardley Wood Road/Wake Green Road.

How do I access the West Midlands Cycle Hire bikes and e-bikes & how much do they cost?

Users can locate the virtual docking stations and hire the bikes and ebikes via the Beryl smartphone app.

To end their ride, once within the virtual docking area they simply press down the yellow lever on the front tyre, as they would in a physical docking station. For full details visit the West Midlands Cycle Hire website.

The normal cost of unlocking a pedal bike is £1 with a 5p per minute charge fter that. This means a 20-minute cycle will cost £2 and an hour £4. Ebikes are £1.50 to unlock and 10p per minute. Bundles of 100, 300 and 600 minutes are available at discounted rates.

The scheme is operated by Serco under contract from TfWM. The bikes are made by Pashley’s in Stratford-upon Avon and the docking stations and locks are also manufactured in the West Midlands.

“Cycling is a fantastic way to stay active – boosting both our mental and physical health – at the same time as helping us to tackle the climate emergency.

“Local people will now be able to hire one of our bikes for a ride around Moseley – or indeed for trips further afield to and from Birmingham city centre. I look forward to seeing the service enjoyed in the months ahead.”

Cllr Izzy Knowles, who represents Moseley ward on Birmingham City Council, said: “I am thrilled to see the Beryl bikes come to Moseley. I look forward to working with the team to extend the network across the area and enable more people to enjoy the experience and convenience of cycling in our city. Thank you to everyone who has worked hard to make this happen.”

Encouraging active travel is a priority for me and I look forward to working with the team to further expand this provision across the whole of Moseley.”

Adam Tranter, West Midlands Cycling and Walking Commissioner, said: “Cycle hire is just one element of our region-wide work to make active travel – cycling and walking – more attractive, convenient and safe for people. Especially for those shorter journeys.

“That is why, working with partners, we are putting unprecedented levels of investment into developing safe cycle routes and infrastructure.

“And of course, West Midlands Cycle Hire opens up cycling for even more people by removing the barriers of owning a bike - so I’m pleased this gives new options for people living, working and visiting Moseley.”
