Joe Lycett thought call he received from police investigating his joke was a prank

Back in June last year, Birmingham-born comedian Joe Lycett had a call from the Police Service for Northern Ireland (PSNI), after someone in the audience was so offended by one of the comedian’s jokes that they called their local force.

The comedian, 33, received a call from the police following complaints about a joke made during a stand up show in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The joke that led to Lycett being reported to the police involved a line about ‘a giant donkey d***’ and is one that Lycett later claimed was one of his better jokes.

The joke was made during Lycett’s ongoing tour ‘ More, More, More! How Do You Lycett? How Do You Lycett?’. The comedian took to social media to let fans know about the incident, and why he received contact from the police about the joke.

He said: “So someone came to my tour show a few weeks back and was offended by one of the jokes. And their perfectly understandable response to this was… to call the f****** police. To be fair to them the fuzz were very nice about it all but felt they had a duty to investigate.”

He added that the matter has now closed.

Lycett thought police call was a prank

Lycett’s support act during the tour was Brennan Reece.

In an interview with Sunday Life, Reece has revealed that Lycett received a call from Belfast police while the pair were out for lunch at a restaurant.

He said: “I thought it was a joke, and Joe thought it was a joke, and it was, like, the chief constable for the Belfast police and he had to basically talk through what happened the night before.

“Someone had watched the whole show and sort of misunderstood a joke, or maybe just needed to lighten up a little bit. And then it nearly resulted in the chief-whatever-he-was from the Belfast police driving all the way to Derry to watch Joe perform this one bit for an audience of one, which would have been the policeman.”
