Lane closures on the Wolverhampton Road and Hagley Road West have been put in place as West Midlands Fire Service tackles a severe blaze at a food outlet.

Firefighters were called to the business in Oldbury just before 11.25am today (Wednesday, April 26).

They said two people were affected by smoke and that police were assisting with traffic management.

A nearby hotel was evacuated. WMFS said it expected roads will be re-opened as soon as it’s safe. In the meantime motorists are being advised to find alternate routes.

A WMFS spokesperson said: “Around 40 firefighters are tackling a severe fire in an Oldbury food outlet. We were called just before 11.25am on Wednesday (26 April) to the Wolverhampton Road premises.

“Seven fire engines, a 4x4 Brigade Response Vehicles and an aerial platform are at the scene. Our first crew arrived five minutes after being mobilised. Two people are understood to have been affected by smoke. This is a severe fire, which has spread to a neighbouring property.

“Firefighters are wearing breathing apparatus and using three main jets to bring the fire under control.Police officers are assisting with traffic management.”
