The pub claimed that “renovations were underway” and it was getting “a beautiful new carpet” - and a new kitchen with 70 microwaves.

The full statement read: “After over a decade running the old girl, we’ve decided to pass the torch on, and join the Wetherspoons family starting today (Saturday 1st April)...

“Renovations are already underway, with a beautiful new carpet being fitted as we speak, alongside a BRAND NEW kitchen featuring 70 microwaves.

“We are now proud to not only be Birmingham’s Oldest Pub, but the UK’s oldest Wetherspoons, so come and join us tonight for 2 for £12 pitchers, and our Curry Club served up all day everyday. ”

It isn’t the only strange announcement in Birmingham this morning. There have also been social media posts about the Rotunda set to double in size, the Bullring Bull being replaced by a bronze balti and Herbert’s Yard street food venue in Longbridge set to become a fish market called Turbot’s Yard!

As today is April 1 we hope these are, in fact, April Fools pranks - which BirminghamWorld is not promoting or taking part in any way this year!
