Section 60 powers were also used last night which allow police to stop and search people.

They can only be used in a designated area for a short period of time, when there is evidence that serious violence has taken place or may take place.

Police carried out 47 stop and searches and seized one knife and a screwdriver. A small quantity of Class B drugs were also seized.

What have investigating officers said about the incident?

Superintendent Jim Munro, from Birmingham Police, said: “We don’t take the decision to use these powers lightly, but in the right circumstances and with the support of the community, it can be a useful tool.

“Two young men have been seriously injured and we’re working hard to understand why this happened and who was responsible.

“As ever we will continue to do all we can to keep our city safe. We’re grateful for the support we’ve seen from the public and we’ll continue to work with them to ensure the city can be safely enjoyed by all.”
