Met Office warning: thunderstorm weather warning issued for Birmingham, and when does warning end?

Birmingham has been warned to brace itself for much of today following the issuing of a weather warning by the Met Office.

The warning is in place for much of the day and into the night, covering a large area of Western England and Wales.

What is the weather warning?

The warning issued by the Met Office is a yellow warning for thunderstorms. It is in place for most of Wales and a large part of Western England, including Birmingham and the West Midlands.

How long is the warning in place for?

At the time of writing, the warning is set to be in place for 10 hours.

It was commissioned at 12pm, and is due to expire at 10pm.

What could the weather warning bring to the region?

The Met Office has issued information on what the region can expect during the warning, this is listed below

  • Driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
  • Delays to train services
  • Some short term loss of power and other services
  • Some flooding of a few homes and businesses, leading to some damage to buildings or structures
  • Some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes

What is the forecast for today?

Warm and cloudy conditions during the afternoon are what could produce any stormy weather, and this evening could see rain showers across the region.

There may be some sunshine around before and after the worst of the rain, but the stormy conditions will prevent any prolonged spells of sun.

The rain will ease and the clouds will become lighter as the expiry of the weather warning approaches, but a high temperature of 15°C could still be reached after 10pm and through the night.

The rain will return during te early hours of Friday, 1 July, but these should only be light and will more than likely have drifted away by the time midmorning comes along.

What is the Met Office outlook for the next few days?

The Met Office summary gives an overview of what kind of weather we can expect in the West Midlands over the next few days.

Today:

It will be a changeable day with a mixture of sunshine and heavy showers, bringing a risk of thunderstorms and hail that may last into the evening. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Tonight:

The heaviest showers will generally clear away to the east during the the first part of the night. A risk of some showers later but some clear spells also. Minimum temperature 11 °C.

Friday:

A generally dry start with some sunny spells Friday, however, showers quickly developing fairly widely, some heavy with a risk of thunder. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Remaining unsettled through the weekend with sunshine and showers. Pleasant in any sunshine but cool in and around showers. Showers becoming lighter and less frequent Monday.
