West Midlands Police said: “We are hoping witnesses may have seen the car, which was heading in the direction of the city, prior to the collision.

“We arrested one man at the scene and he is currently in custody on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving above the legal alcohol limit.”

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from their Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are in the early stages of our investigation. The man was left in a critical condition in hospital and we are supporting his family through this difficult time.

“The road is very busy and we are hoping people will come forward with information. We would like to speak to witnesses or anyone who may have any dash cam footage to help us understand exactly what has happened.”
