After it was carefully treated by them, the feline was sent to the vets. The cat had a black and white coat and was covered in soot from the fire.

The incident was brought under control quickly and there were no further casualties.

The fire service has been busy throughout the summer of 2022 with multiple incidents being caused by the heatwave. From wildfires to urban incidents due to carelessly dropped cigarettes, they have had to tackle it all.

On 19 August, the West Midlands Fire Service tackled a fire in West Bromwich which was caused by 300 tonnes of cardboard at an industrial site. Two days ago, they fought off flames at a house in Edgbaston. It was believed to be linked to the growing of cannabis, which is now being investigated by the West Midlands Police.

In Lozells, Birmingham City Council is currently facing a challenge to provide sufficient housing for the growing population and meet the need for larger family accommodation. The Aston, Newtown and Lozells Area Action Plan (AAP) part of Birmingham’s Local Development Framework (LDF). A large proportion of the Wards in the AAP area fall in the 5% most deprived in the country (Indices of Multiple Deprivation, 2004).

However, there are still great things available to do in the ward. You can visit the St Mary’s Convent, which was designed by Augustus Pugin, in nearby Handsworth, James Watt Gatehouse and the Birmingham Asian Resource Centre building.

Most of the buildings in the area are large-scale post-war housing.

While prevention is better than cure in case of fires, you can always have an escape plan ready if the situation arises. Cat charity Cats Protection advises that you keep exits clear and avoid placing your pets’ beds or toys in front of them. You can also leave your cat flap unlocked.

A cat is likely to hide when fire and smoke alarms go off. However, the ideal way would be to stay calm, act quickly and exit the building and call 999.

If your cat is still inside, let firefighters know and tell them likely places that your cats may hide. Smoke inhalation is just as dangerous for pets and even if they have not suffered burns they should be seen by a vet urgently.
