At around 4.45am on 14 December, he smashed his way into a house on Tame Road in the Witton area of Birmingham.

He was carrying a knife and threatened the family who had come downstairs when they heard a window smash.

Hamza ran off when the residents, who had barricaded themselves into a bedroom, called the police. He escaped in a car.

Nothing was stolen and no one was injured, but Hamza’s blood was found by West Midlands Police’s forensic experts in the living room and on the stairs.

The sample at the crime scene was matched with records held on the national DNA database.

West Midlands Police said the probability of obtaining this type of DNA match is one in one billion.

Hamza was arrested on 6 January, three weeks after the crime. He was charged with aggravated burglary and pleaded guilty to the crime at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on 7 January 2022.
