The coronation of King Charles III is taking place on Saturday May 6 and an extra bank holiday on the following has been agreed for people to celebrate the occasion,

In Birmingham plans have been announced for celebrations in the city centre with an official big screen planned and a full programme of entertainment on May 6 and 7.

Local people are also being encouraged to hold their own street parties and a deadline has been set for them to apply for road closures.

The announcement has been released by Birmingham City Council this afternoon (Monday, May 27). More details will follow. Here’s everything we know so far:

Centenary Square Big Screen & entertainment

Centenary Square has been selected as the chosen destination for the official celebrations in Birmingham. It’s a change from Victoria Square where the Platinum Jubilee celebrations were held and Commonwealth Games big screen was placed last year.

Birmingham City Council said people wil be able to watch the Coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey on a big screen and a full programme of entertainment will follow on both Saturday and Sunday (May 6 and 7).

Street Parties in Birmingham

The council said that local peopleare encouraged to host their own street parties as part of a Big Lunch planned for Sunday, May 7.

Residents will need to apply for a road closure, free of charge, before 21 April 2023 if they wish to use their street or cul-de-sac for a get together with friends and neighbours.

The closing date for applications for street party road closures is Friday 21 April 2023.

The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Maureen Cornish, said: “The King’s Coronation will be a fantastic opportunity for communities to come together, celebrate with their friends and neighbours on what will be a very special day across the country.

“I hope Birmingham will do itself proud by hosting some amazing street parties that are fit for our new King!  This really is a time for people across the city to come together and celebrate.”
