An Insulate Britain protest is causing traffic disruption in Birmingham city centre this morning.

Activists are currently protesting on Great Charles Street, blocking roads around Paradise Circus and causing long delays for motorists.

Around 60 people from the environmental activist group are disrupting traffic across the country in London, Birmingham and Manchester this morning, with the protesters blocking the A4400 inner ring road in Birmingham.

Police are currently at the scene.

A statement from West Midlands Police read: “We’re currently responding to activists on Great Charles Street in Birmingham city centre.

“We are working to deal with this as quickly as possible. Delays are expected and we ask people travelling to avoid the area if possible.”

This is the seventeenth time that Insulate Britain has caused disruption on motorways.

Climate change campaigners prepare for rally

The protest comes with a rally planned at Millennium Point in Birmingham on Saturday, November 6, alongside other protests across the country and a main event in Glasgow where the COP26 talks will be taking place.

The events are being organised by the COP26 Coalition, and Cllr Olly Armstrong (Lab, Northfield) is involved in the running of the Birmingham rally.

The city protest is due to include ten blocs representing different aspects of climate justice.
