Singer Boy George, who joined I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! has a long and deep connection with Birmingham. He lived in Birmingham during his formative years and still has family in the city.

The flamboyant Culture Club singer is 61 and is not slowing down. He has become the highest paid participant in the reality TV show this year. It is believed that he’s received almost £1 million, writes the DailyMail. This is the first time the singer has competed in a reality TV show though he appeared as a judge on The Voice before.

His four-member band shot to fame in the 80s but broke up not too long after. However, they have reunited several times since then and George has also carved out a solo career for himself.

Boy George’s Birmingham connection

He moved to nearby Walsall in his teens and lived in a flat with another musician. George, whose real name is George Alan O’Dowd, worked at a fashion store in the Bullring and would frequent clubs like The Rum Runner and Holy City Zoo.

He previously said that he won Birmingham’s Weirdest Person contest and received a Champagne bottle from footballer Andy Gray for it.

He still remembers his time in Birmingham fondly and has an aunt who lives here. His grandmother also lived here previously, according to Express & Star.

When actor Chris ‘O’ Dowd of the IT Crowd fame started researching his family, he found he might be related to Boy George.

“I found out that my great-grandfather was a bigamist. He was a travelling salesman and had a second family in Birmingham.

Apparently that strand of the family gave birth to a George O’Dowd...I’ve mentioned it to Boy George and he’s quite into the idea that we might be cousins,” he said, according to Daily Star.
