The Old Fire Station, located on the corner of Aston Street, first opened in 1935, but closed its doors in 2006.

However, accommodation company Student Roost have given the property a new lease of life with a full renovation.

Students living at the property can enjoy a night in front of the plasma screen, plan a video game or pool tournament, secure a quiet corner to study, or catch-up with friends and flatmates.

The building is home to up to 430 students studying at Aston University, Birmingham City University, and the University of Birmingham each year.

Student residents can also access a free-to-use, fully equipped gym, private study room with original 1930s features, and the recently refurbished social space.

The building, which was designed by Herbert Humphries and Herbert Manzoni, was also featured in interior design programme Grand Designs, as well as TV drama, Line of Duty.

Arifah Begum, who’s living at The Old Fire Station while studying at Aston University, has already been enjoying the new space and using it to host events for her fellow residents.

She said: “I’ve always used the social space, and the new refurb is so much better and nicer to spend time in.

“It’s more modern, with lots of space for students to chill with friends and more space to unwind after a stressful day at uni. It’s so fresh and new and really feels like home. I’ve taken so many photos for my social media.”

‘It’s such an iconic building’

Adam Simmons, Regional Operations Manager for Student Roost, said: “The Old Fire Station is such an iconic Birmingham building, and still has such a prominent position in the city’s landscape almost 90 years after it opened in 1935.

“Although the buildings original features and striking exterior are a huge talking point for students, whether they are seeing it for the first time or have lived with us for several years, we wanted to create a more modern space for our residents to relax, meet friends, and unwind after a week of lectures, seminars and studying”.

“With the help of Inspired Projects, we have successfully created an inspiring space for our residents to enjoy which beautifully compliments the art deco style of the building.

“We’re sure we’ll see the new social space appearing on Instagram as much as the existing period features.”
