After a long night shift, one of the last things off duty nurse Eiren Carbery probably would have expected was to be called into action to help to save a man’s life on the side of a road.
But that’s exactly what happened on 24 June last year.
Eiren was driving home along the Bristol Road South, when she saw a man had collapsed by the side of the road at around 9am.

Hide AdShe immediately stopped after seeing the man and to help, Eiren began CPR and mouth to mouth resuscitation – a particularly selfless act given the Covid pandemic and potential repercussions.
A police constable who was on her way to work also then stopped and helped to administer CPR while Eiren managed to unblock the man’s airway.
When paramedics arrived they managed to get a pulse, and there is no doubt that Eiren’s actions helped prevent a time delay that could well have been fatal.
After helping to save the man’s life, Eiren’s bravery and selflessness was deservedly commended.

Residents thank Eiren for her kindness and bravery
After West Midlands Police announced Eiren had won the award on its social media pages, residents took to Facebook to thank her for her kindness and bravery.
Commenting on the post, one Facebook user, wrote: “Well done, Eiren. This would have been a totally different outcome if it hadn’t have been for your swift and prompt action. Very well deserved.”
Another said: “Wonderful. It takes some guts to actually begin administering CPR.”
