HMP Birmingham is home to more than a thousand prisoners including some of the most notirious criminals in the UK - but what are they having for Christmas dinner?
The prison is located in Winson Green and the category B male prisoners serving time there will get a hearty Christmas meal that doesn’t cost anything extra to the taxpayer. The prison inmates will get a choice between four meal options for Christmas dinner in on December 25, 2022.

“Meals in prisons over Christmas and New Year are paid for from within the existing budget and at no extra cost to the taxpayer,” HMPPS Briefing & Correspondence Team said in response to a Freedom of Information request.
The Winson Green prison inmates will be also get vegan options for their Christmas Day meals this year, BirminghamWorld found through the FOI request to the Ministry of Justice.

What’s the menu?
For Christmas Day lunch, prisoners will be able to choose from:
Option A: Potato & Spinach Cheese Bake

Option B: Halal Roast Beef
Option C: Roast Turkey
Option D: Vegan Cajun Roulade

They will also have a variety of sides available, including pigs in blankets, roasted potatoes, mixed vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, as well as stuffing gravy, cranberry sauce, and horseradish.
What’s for afters?
For dessert, those at HMP Birmingham are only being offered one item - a traditonal Christmas pudding and custard
The FOI request also revealed the menu for Christmas evening. Prisoners will get four options for this as well.

Option B: Cold Halal Tikka Chicken Leg
Option C: Phat Festive Chunky Sausage Roll
Option D: 5 x Onion Bhaji Mint Yog Salad

The sides for the evening meal are: salad, coleslaw, crisps, and bread roll.


There is no Christmas meal without a mince pie so the finale of the meal - the dessert - will be a mince pie.
Notorious inmates over the years have included Fred West, the Birmingham Six, and even a celebrity - Ozzy Osbourne.

The category B prison faced riots in 2016 leading to up to 240 prisoners being moved out. It was one of the worst prison riots in England in 25 years. Inmates had taken charge of four wings and had also damaged the premises, which is run by G4S.
