Cyclist dies after hit-and-run in Erdington, Birmingham

Police are appealing for information after a middle aged man riding his bicycle died in a collision involving a car which failed to stop at the scene.

Officers were called to Chester Road at its junction with Gravelly Lane in Erdington, Birmingham, at around 5.30pm on Wednesday May 31, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

West Midlands Police has announced that it has arrested a 36 year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving who remains in custody this afternoon (Thursday, June 1). They are continuing to appeal for witnesses.

This is the second fatal road collision in Erdington in recent days. A four year-old boy was fatally struck by a car on George Road on Bank Holiday Monday. And on Saturday a 13 year-old girl was fighting for her life in hospital following a hit and run collision on Holly Lane in Erdington.

There was also a major crash on Pershore Road in Selly Park yesterday in which a man was left in a critical ocndition and five people, including a child were injured when a bus and car collided near Tally Ho Police Training Ground.

Prior to the arrest for the hit and run on Chester Road Det Sgt Paul Hughes from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “We believe the car initially stopped but then drove away from the scene.

“We’re carrying out urgent enquiries to find that car and the driver, and I really need to hear from anyone with dash-cam, mobile phone or CCTV footage.”

The first ambulance arrived eight minutes after the call and was backed up by a second ambulance, the West Midlands Care team, The MERIT trauma Doctor and Critical Care Paramedic and a paramedic officer.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said of the hit and run collison on Chester Road: “When crews arrived, they found members of the public providing basic life support to the cyclist.

“They immediately took over and provided advance trauma care. Sadly, despite their best efforts, it was not possible to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”
