Police are asking second-hand shop workers and pawnbrokers in the West Midlands to be vigilant after £40,000 worth of gold coins were stolen from a house in Harborne.

Officers are searching for the burglars following the crime, which happened at around midnight on Wednesday, 23 February.

Burglars broke into the house on Woodville Road and stole the Krugerrands - South African gold coins. A white Hyundai Santa Fe was also taken.

The coins are likely to be sold on online auction sites and to unsuspecting second-hand shops or pawn brokers.

A spokesman for the force, said: “If you work in these shops, please keep a look out.“If you’ve been asked to buy the gold coins or see them for sale, send us a message via Live Chat on our website west-midlands.police.uk where you can also find home security advice.

“Alternatively call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 – you may be entitled to a reward.“However you get in touch, please quote investigation number 20/246943/22.”
