The family of Haji Rab Nawaz from Handsworth killed outside a Coventry mosque have paid tribute to him

The loving family of Handsworth man Haji Choudhary Rab Nawaz - stabbed to death outside a mosque in Coventry - have paid tribute to ‘a humble, loving family man’.

Mr Nawaz, aged 52, died in the early hours of Sunday evening (October 2) following disorder outside the Jamiah Masjid & Institute - at the junction of Durbar Avenue and Queen Mary’s Road.

Police said they were called to the incident after 9pm following reports of a fight involving a large group of men - some with knives. Mr Nawaz was found injured and despite the best efforts to save him, he died a short time later.

Police detained four more people in connection with Mr Nawaz death - but they are seeking more people to come forward with information about the killing, and they have created a dedicated webpage to help.

Two men, aged 27 and 56, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remian in police custody. Three more men - aged 20, 23 and 29 - are being also being questioned on suspicion of murder and a 54-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of assisting offenders.

In a statement Mr Nawaz’s family said: "We thank the emergency services for their tireless effort for trying to save our father.

"We are hopeful in the police investigation and we, the family, want all those responsible to be brought to justice.

"They have extinguished a dependable shining light of good, an innocent humble loving family man, our father, our brother, our friend, Haji Choudhary Rab Nawaz."
