Fundraiser set up in memory of missing military veteran found dead at Staffordshire beauty spot

A missing Cannock man was found dead days after disappearance

A fundraising appeal has been launched in memory of a “ kind-hearted” father-of-two found dead at Cannock Chase following a search by the emergency services.

The remains of the man, named only as Alex by Stafford Police, was discovered on August 28 after he vanished after being seen in Bridgtown and in Gospel End near Dudley the previous week.

Tributes have been pouring in for the former soldier with an online collection already surpassing its initial £2,000 target and hitting more than £7,000 on August 30 with the help of more than 480 donors.

Appeal organisers Chase TV stated: “Alex was so much more than the circumstances in which we lost him. He was a much-loved dad to his two children, a son, brother, partner, friend and Armed Forces veteran.

“His children and family meant everything to him. He loved deeply, and those closest to him knew just how much the people in his life mattered to him. Alex was funny, kind-hearted and always willing to help others. He had previously volunteered his own time to travel abroad and help people affected by conflict get to safety.

“It was simply the kind of person Alex was. If he saw someone who needed help and there was something he could do, he wanted to help.

“The incredible response when Alex went missing showed just how many people cared. People searched, shared appeals, checked CCTV and dashcam footage, offered equipment and resources, travelled to help and supported those closest to him through some of the most difficult days imaginable.

“We also want to recognise the incredible support we received from the search and rescue volunteers who gave their time, experience and resources to help us. We will always be grateful for what they did for Alex and our family.

“Having experienced first-hand just how important these volunteer teams are to families at times like this, we would also encourage people to continue supporting search and rescue organisations and the invaluable work they do in their communities. Since Alex was found, many people have asked if there is a way they can continue to show their support.”

The proceeds will go towards Alex’s funeral and any remaining sum will go towards a lasting memorial for him and something special for his children. To support the appeal visit website Go Fund Me.
