Erdington building fire believed to have been started deliberately, says West Mids Fire Service

West Midlands Fire Service said that the blaze in a building in Erdington, Birmingham was deliberately started.

At 10.40am on Monday (June 5) West Midlands Fire Service started to receive several 999 calls to a building on fire in Erdington, Birmingham.

Six fire crews responded from a number of city fire stations, with the first arriving four minutes after being mobilised. Around 25 firefighters were dealing with the fire in the neighbourhood.

The building, believed to be unused commercial premises, is near the junction of Sutton New Road and Summer Road.

Sutton New Road and York Road in Erdington were closed for safety, while firefighting continued.

There was heavy congestion in the area, according to West Midlands Roads. They said: “Please avoid the area for the time being or face delays to your journey.” However, the incident has been marked closed.

West Midlands Fire Service said: “Our crews have now left the scene, but will be making revisits to ensure there are no hotspots with the potential to reignite.

“The fire is believed to have been started deliberately. We understand that re-securing of the site is being arranged by the agents who are marketing it.”
