Emma and Matt Willis’ relationship timeline

Co-founder, bassist and co-vocalist of the pop-punk band Busted, Matt, and the TV presenter, Emma, met in 2004 when the latter was an MTV presenter and she had to interview the band.

They started dating in 2005 with Matt going down on one knee in 2007 when they were on a holiday in Venice for Emma’s birthday, according to the Independent.

During an appearance on The One Show Emma, 47, said: “We were in Venice and it was my birthday and he kept wanting to go on walks down little canals which is really not kind of Matt really. He went really quiet and I actually thought he was going to finish with me.

“Then we got to the Rialto Bridge and we got to the top and he looked at me and he pulled this box out of his pocket and he went to kind of drop on one knee and I just went, ‘Don’t you dare’ and grabbed him.”

She didn’t want him to propose in public but he still went ahead with it and the rest is history.

They married on July 5, 2008 at Rushton Hall, Northamptonshire. Since then, the couple have partnered up for work several times as they co-hosted I’m a Celebrity: Extra Camp, the Brit Awards for ITV2 in 2008 and the Baftas for E! Network.

The couple welcomed three children, Isabelle, 13, Ace, 11, and Trixie, seven, during their marriage. Emma has opened up about their different parenting styles and that she is jealous of him being the “fun” one.

Speaking on the Dadpod podcast, she said: “Oh, he’s like the fourth child. And that for me, is perfect, because I think he has such a fantastic bond and relationship with them because he can get down on their level - do you know what I mean? And when they want fun they go to him.

It makes me feel sensationally boring because I’m like, ‘Oh I’m that one, am I? .... [I’m the one] that tells them off and makes sure the washing is done’. I am the quintessential mum and, I think, security. That’s what I’ve always had from my dad and Matt is just always there and always fun and I’m quite jealous of that.”

Becoming a parent changes most people and Emma believes that their first-born helped her husband turn his life around.

“What really changed him was our daughter, Isabelle. He was already doing it [recovery] himself, then she arrived and that made him even more determined,” she said, according to Mirror. Matt Willis has battled addiction for several years with being in and out of rehabs and his documentary Matt Willis: Fighting Addiction went in depth about its effect on his wife.
