A drink driver who was caught driving well over the speed limit has been jailed.

Lewis Kitson, 31, was caught driving at 80mph in a 30mph zone in Lichfield Road, Sutton Coldfield, in the early hours of December 14.

He turned into a side road and circled around the police car following him twice before driving round a roundabout three times.

When officers stopped and detained Kitson, they spotted he smelt strongly of alcohol. They also found drug paraphernalia in his car.

The 31-year-old failed to provide a specimen of breath at the roadside and tested positive for cannabis and cocaine. In addition, he had removed the number plates from his car in an attempt to avoid ANPR recognition.

He was remanded in custody and sentenced on December 15 at Birmingham Magistrates Court for driving while disqualified, driving while over the legal alcohol limit, driving without an MOT, driving without insurance, driving without tax and driving without number plates.

Kitson, of Mountbatten Close, West Bromwich, was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison and was banned from driving for four and a half years.

West Midlands Police said: “We are working closely with other forces to raise awareness of the dangers of drink and drug driving. Even if you haven’t had a drink since the night before, you can still be over the limit the next morning.

“Stay safe this festive season.”
