When they arrived they found a small fire in the stairwell which they doused. Four West Midlands Police officers were then sprayed with an ‘unknown liquid’ and were taken to hospital for treatment.

A 38-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and assaulting police officers.

Superintendent Sam Batey, from Birmingham police, said: "Our main priority was to ensure the safety of residents and from body worn video we feel our officers displayed some serious bravery considering what they were presented with.
