A teenage armed robbery suspect has been taken into police custody for questioning.

The youth was arrested by officers who were called to Rookery Road in Handsworth at around 3.30pm on Sunday (April 21).

Reports of an armed robbery where cash and earphones were stolen had been reported to West Midlands Police who conducted a search around the area. An hour later they arrested a 17 year-old boy in Queens Heath Road. An imitation firearm was found and seized as the suspect was taken into custody for questioning.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “Reducing robbery is a force priority for us and we’re running Operation Ruby to tackle those committing these crimes. From the initial call to report a robbery, right through to charging offenders to court – Operation Ruby is looking at processes and improvements we can make in the service we provide to victims.
