Man dies after stabbing near Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital

A man died after being found with stab wounds in a car in Metchley Lane. Roads remain shut this morning (Friday, September 23) with buses being diverted

Police launched a murder investigation following the death of a man who was found with a stab wound near Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Thursday afternoon (September 22).

The deceased man was found in a car which had crashed in Metchley Lane, in Harborne, at just after 3pm. Officers attended and found the man being treated by paramedics.

But, sadly, despite their efforts he was later pronounced dead at hospital. Roads in the area remain cordoned off as enquiries get underway to establish exactly what happened.

Hospital staff have been advised to use an access road near the Learning Hub to enable ambulance access.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police, said: “We’re keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the car, which was silver, driving erratically from the direction of Harborne Lane prior to the crash.

“We’re also keen to trace a man seen running from the car, as he may have vital information to hep the investigation. Anyone with information has been asked to get in touch, quoting log 2423 of 22 September.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to an incident on Metchley Lane at 2.56pm yesterday, two ambulances, two paramedic officers and a MERIT trauma doctor attended the scene.

“On arrival we discovered one male patient who was in a critical condition. Ambulance staff administered specialist trauma care at the scene before transporting the patient to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.”

A statement from West Midlands Roads, read: “This incident is expected to be ongoing for several hours - if you’re travelling around Queen Elizabeth Hospital, consider using alternative routes as delays and congestion is building.”

National Express West Midlands said this morning (Friday, September 23): “Metchley Lane, Harborne is closed until further notice. Service 19 is diverted via Abbey Road, St Mary’s Road and Harborne Park Road in both directions. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.”
